 Book Review : The Secret Lives Of The Doyenne Of Didsbrook

 What first appears to be a peaceful village drama quickly turns into a layered story about reputation, loyalty, and the hidden truths people spend years protecting.

The novel opens with the death of Jocelyn Robertshaw, a successful author and former actress whose larger-than-life presence made her central to the community of Didsbrook. Her death sends shockwaves through the village because a tragedy of this kind feels almost impossible in a place where everyone knows everyone. This premise creates tension, how can a village built on familiarity also be home to so many secrets?

Lucy Fothergill’s return home and her determination to question the official explanation of Jocelyn’s death made the story more interesting. Her investigation gradually exposes the complicated lives of Didsbrook’s residents, revealing that behind every friendly interaction is a story left untold.

Barrie captures village life with great detail. The setting has all the appeal of a traditional English countryside mystery: close-knit neighbors, lingering gossip, and generations of shared history but the novel also explores the emotional consequences of keeping secrets for too long. 

The characters are well written. The storyline kept me on the edge of my seat. The cover photo is eye-catching and the title is apt according to the content.

The repeated attacks added urgency to the story. It made me feel like time was running out, which kept me turning pages quickly.

In the end, the reveal was satisfying and made sense. It’s a well-written story that delivers exactly what you expect from a good crime thriller.
