Author Interview : Pravin Agarwal

Author Interview : Pravin Agarwal

Hello everyone,
Today I am going to introduce you to the author of the best selling book 'The Girl In The Dream'

Let's start!

1- First of all introduce yourself to our readers.

I am the author of the best-selling novel 'The Girl in the Dream – A Love Story Planned 500 years ago'. I was born and brought up in Ajmer, Rajasthan. I earned my Engineering degree from Rajasthan University after which I took up a job in a corporate firm. I worked in Tata Consultancy Service for eight-year as Mainframe Consultant. After that, I joined Hexaware Technologies as a Technical Architect. I am a fitness enthusiast. I love exploring new places besides reading and writing books.

2- Tell us something about your book 'The Girl in The Dream: A Love Story Plane 500 years ago'

It's a romantic thriller with a pinch of mythology in it. The story revolves around the mysterious girl that comes into the protagonist's dream. It connects love stories in two timelines, one of the current times and one 500 years ago. The book is entertaining throughout. It will definitely keep you hooked till the end with interesting twist and turns. Thrilling romance is the USP of the book. Also, there is lot you can learn from it about the life. Do give it a chance if you haven’t already read it.

3. From the title your book seems to be romantic. Share with us regarding the response of readers.

The response from the readers has been overwhelming. I am highly grateful to all my readers for their continuous love and support. It motivates me to perform better.

4 - How do you handle negative feedbacks?

I appreciate honest feedbacks as it helps us evolve as a writer. Whenever there is negative feedback, I try to find out what reader didn’t like and how I can address it in my next book.

5 - Are you planning other books? How soon can your readers expect your next book?

It is too early to say anything about my next book. Currently, I am completely focused on promoting my current book ‘The Girl in the Dream: A Love Story Planed 500 years ago’. I want it to reach as many readers as possible.

6 - How has your journey as an author been so far?

It’s a steep learning experience for me. As an Author our job is not only to write a book but also to present it as a salable product, market it and get it in hands of as many readers as possible. There is a lot of money and effort involved in it. If the book didn’t sell, then no one is going to invest their time and money in our next book. From good editing, suitable book size, affordable book cost to the marketing plan, there are numerous factors to take care of.

7- Who is your favourite Indian and foreign romantic author?

Chetan Bhagat is my all-time favorite Indian romantic author. I had read all his books. He is absolutely brilliant in his craft and one can learn a lot from him. He is the biggest-selling English-language novelist in India. I suppose many Indians started reading books because of him. He is phenomenal.

Nora Roberts is my favorite foreign romantic author. She is an outstanding writer of more than 225 romance novels. She has more than 400 million copies of her books in print.

8 - What does your family think of your writing?

I began writing in the year 2017. I did not have much writing experience before that. My friend once mentioned to me why don’t you write a book as you read so much. I didn’t take him seriously until my wife also praised me for my writing skills. I am highly grateful to my wife for motivating me to write.

9 -What is the best way to market your books?

Marketing starts the moment you write the first word of your book. You had to make sure that you maintain the quality. When you launch something in the market then it had to deliver value to the readers. Then only people will spend their hard-earned money and purchase your book. So, the best way to market your book is to write one that readers couldn’t skip once their eyes fall on it. The second step is to let more and more people know about it. That you can achieve by marketing on Amazon, social media, etc.

10- According to you, what are the elements that make a good story?

The book needs to be entertaining in the first place. Readers should be able to connect with the story and the characters.

11 - What advice would you give to writers just starting out?

Maintain discipline and write something daily.

12 - Any message for your readers?

Don’t stick to one genre, keep exploring. If you are a non-fiction reader, then deliberately try fiction books and vice versa. Within fiction also there are lots of genres that you can try. It will expand your horizon and thinking.

Thanks for reading.

Author Interview : Nashit Ahmed

Author Interview : Nashit Ahmed

Hello everyone,
Today I am going to introduce you to the author of 'The Dance of Bride'

Let's start!

1) Please Introduce yourself to our Audience ( Repeated Question for all the Interviews )
Author : I was born and raised in Calcutta by my parents, Shakil and Seema Ahmed. I enrolled in Ling Liang High School as a child and subsequently completed my High School from the same, in the year 2009. I then enrolled in Calcutta University for an undergraduate degree in Economics, from Maulana Azad College and completed it in the year 2013. After my Graduation I started to work under my father as an apprentice and worked on my writing through the nights and the free time I have had.

2) Share with us regarding the response of readers on "The Dance of Bride".
Author : The response has been very encouraging. I have had a lot of positive feedback from my fellow authors as well. Almost anyone who has read, 'The Dance of The Bride', has nothing but good things to say about it. Hopefully this trend continues...

3) Do you relate yourself to any character from the recent Title "The Dance of Bride"? If yes, why?
Author : I relate to all of them. The reason why that is, is because I have lived their journey. I know where they come from, why they do what they do and it's fascinating to see their arcs shape up in the way they do. I can honestly tell you, I was pretty surprised myself a lot of times.

4) Have you ever considered writing under a pseudonym ?
Author : Nah. I think I like my name, Nashit... There is definitely nothing shitty about it haaaa

5) Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?
Author : Okay this is an interesting question. While each of my work does stand on it's own, but there is a definitive link to all of them. I won't say much about it because it's still a work in progress... But yeah you all will be pleasantly surprised when the dots connect.

6) Are you working on any books/projects that you would like to share with us?
Author : Yes. I have been working on a project that's again very close to my heart. It's set in the 1800s Bengal. It's almost done and I can't wait to thrill all of you with it.

7) What’s the best way to market your books?
Author : I think the best way to market a book is to write an exceptional, original piece of work. That and a ton of positive reviews.

8) What was your first introduction to horror literature, the one that made you choose that genre to write?
Author : It would be 'Salem's Lot' by Stephen King.

9) What advice would you give to writers just starting out?
Author : Read, write and try build a community. Don't try to exploit your readers, be genuine with them and things will be good in the long run. The grind is real but the grind is what makes it worth it.

10) According to you, what are the elements that make a good horror story?
Author : Emotions. If one cannot make the readers connect and engage to the characters you'll find it hard for the work to be a success in the long run. One other important aspect I cannot stress enough on, is the build up to the reveal. Don't worry about the over the top tropes that sadly a lot of people fall into. Be original and creative with your work.

11) What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
Author : Ummm ... I think ... Okay yeah so I don't know how long this will continue but the Title for the story is the first thing that pops into my head. The Story then follows itself.

12) Any message for your readers.
Author : I hope it's been a worthwhile journey. I hope the characters get to live in your heart for a long, long time. Above all I am absolutely indebted to you guys, for spending your money and your precious time on 'The Dance of The Bride.' Your love is truly humbling. And yeah I hope you guys digged the story.

Thanks for reading.

Author Interview : Neelam Saxena Chandra

Author Interview : Neelam
Saxena Chandra

Hello everyone,
Today I am going to introduce you to the author of Kai Basant Dekhe Hai Humnein

Let's start!

1- First of all introduce yourself to our readers.
I work as an Additional Divisional Railway Manager, Pune. I am an Engineering graduate from VNIT and have done my Post Graduation Diploma in IM&HRD and also in Finance. I have completed a summer course in Finance from London School of Economics. I have authored 4 novels, 1 novella and 6 short story collections, 31 poetry collections and 13 children’s books to my credit. I am a bilingual writer; writing in English and Hindi. I hold a record with the Limca Book of Records -2015 for being the Author having the highest number of publications in a year in English and Hindi, besides two other records. I have won II prize in a poetry contest organized by American Embassy and in a National poetry contest organized by Poetry Council of India, 2016. I have received, Sohanlal Dwivedi Puraskar for children’s literature by Maharashtra state Hindi Sahitya Akademi for the year 2018, Humanity International Women Achiever Awards 2018, Bharat Nirman Literary award in 2017, Premchand award by Ministry of Railways, Rabindranath Tagore International Poetry award, Soninder Samman, Freedom award by Radio city for Lyrics along with other awards and honors. I was listed in Forbes as one among 78 most popular authors in the country in 2014.
My short story collection “Lines of Fate” remained in the top 10 on bestsellers list on Amazon (India) since its release and was under no 3 on new hot releases for almost a month. Similarly, “Kai Basant Dekhe Hain Maine”, my latest poetry collection received a best-seller tag for quite a few days.

2- Tell us something about your latest book 'Kai Basant Dekhe Hai Maine'.
Most of the times, external things such as a good outing, some shopping, meeting some friend, seeing the flowers bloom in the spring etc gives you enormous pleasure. However, why should you depend on things outside your control for happiness? One should have spring inside the soul so that no external factor has the power to destroy that inner peace.
Most of the poems have been written in this book in quest of that inner peace.

3 - you have written around 57 books , Which genre you enjoyed writing the most?
Oh, it all depends upon my mood! I enjoy writing in different genre every time. And I love it.
Initially, I was advised that it isn’t a good marketing strategy, but I never cared – after all, I was writing because it gave me pleasure and because people enjoyed my writings. Later, it turned out that various readers love different kinds of book and my writings do have a great market too!

4- Did you always want to become a writer?
Though I loved writing, I had never thought that becoming a writer was a feasibility.
I enjoyed Maths and Physics too and career wise, I chose to be an Engineer. However, I continued to write. I will certainly not claim to be the best writer, but I am happy and contended to be where I am in this journey of writing.

5 -  How do you handle negative feedbacks?
I read all negative feedbacks and dwell upon it for some time till my heart speaks out if it’s written because of genuine error/mistake or simple envy.
In the first case, I try to improvise. In the second case, I smile and leave it at that. After all, not everyone is going to like you in life and you have to learn to live with it.

6 - How soon can your readers expect your next book?
My next book is a very emotional novel. However, I can reveal more about it in a few days only – maybe you will have to interview me again! 

7 - How has your journey as an author been so far?
It has been very interesting.
Firstly, writing is very cathartic and it has helped me in making me more focussed. Secondly, I have made some awesome friends. Thirdly, it has raised my confidence levels.

I have been very happy and I suppose, that it matters the most.

8 - Who is your favourite Indian and foreign author?
It’s very difficult to name one favorite author, but if you ask me to name one, then it is Erich Segal among foreign authors and Rabindra Nath Tagore among the Indians.

9 - What does your family think of your writing?
They are all very supportive – especially my daughter who has even edited some of my poetry books and novels. She’s my best critic and has often made me erase chapters because she didn’t like it.
It has also inspired my niece Tavishi, who is only 12-year-old, but aspires to be an author and writes stories at times.

10 - Any message for your readers?
Hope you are enjoying reading my books dear readers! Please keep giving me feedback and follow my Facebook page or Insta profile for more details regarding my upcoming books and poems etc.

Thanks for reading.

Author Interview : Saurabh Pant

Author Interview : Saurabh Pant

Hello everyone,
Today I am going to introduce you to the author of 'Warming Boom'

Let's start!

1.How Nature Inspire you?
Born to a city that has phenomenal natural calibre, a place that has many cultural and social essence, and later on having school education in the capital of hilly state, It has always been very delightful to stay close to nature, observe its natural impressions, and in such ways it has been a great pleasure to live out the moments of my life close to nature and enjoy its real prestige around.
What it does as an inspiring factor that it gives the calmness requires to do bigger tasks and make sure that they do get accomplished in right direction, it has made heart blissful and an experience of lifetime to save for sure, the way my house is located close to green forests on the top and the honorary lake in the lower land all coming closer as inspiration makes it sublime, and what it has resulted that it gives a clear impression to sense of purpose for which it has been an inspiring factor by many ways.
Thus the most powerful inspiring feeling these hills have given me is to stand still like a rock, be determined and execute plans no matter whatever conditions and challenge rise in front, and to stay firm, be calm and make sure that things not go to haywire situations for which I am deeply indebted to the nature around, feels blissful to have got such environment, and lets hope that it would keep inspiring me to write more and work out more bigger plans in future.

2.What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?
There are many things to learn when you write books, You have to be on the spot, you require discipline, and that's the first idea that comes to your mind as you may require plan, and if you spill it out without right accuracy, things can be very critical so that's the first fact I learnt while writing books.
Second thing that counts for an author while writing a book is to decide what would be the choice of his or her audience who would read for which Psychological and cultural understanding of the country or area to choose is vital, thus writing books It helped me a lot to understand what my readers want and how to choose it carefully.
Lastly you require a strong financial plan, an economic goal to settle, and if you can't manage things well it doesn't suit you in any ways, thus how to financially be updated and in what way it should be used was the biggest learning curve for me after becoming a writer.
Yet the most surprising element I learnt from writing works is the changes thinking process could give you and it can only do you by writing books which require a complex set of adaptation, thus it helps in giving a new thinking ideology and get settled with it.

3. As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?
I wanted to settle in with something unique, the way it should help me to become better, and let me continue to contribute for my society.
Though before I lost vision around age of 12, I had few dreams that require vision to fulfil, but once I entered to the visionless world with students like me around special school, Things changed rapidly and so did my approach.
Thus from such point of time, I learnt quickly to write things out, practiced hard to be into the field of Quizzing, and hence it has been a great journey the person I have become today.

4.What's your working schedule when you are writing?
Usually I plan night hours to do my writing, especially when I have planned a book and wish to complete it, in the day hours its lot of hassle and I feel its more effective to do the stuff around night.
Although if I am at my home, its not a big deal, as Nainital is a beautiful hill station, gives you exact peace and harmony to work around, and the environment it possess usually helps a  lot for writing.
Thus my schedule for writing may come for 2-4 hours at a time, I don't plan big or continued hours of hard work as it can also bring stress, and its not a cake walk to plan all efforts out, Thus I set a schedule which would have some laughter, some tea session going around, and while its all on I keep working and makes it a nice mood to settle all things out.

5.What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
As far any peculiar standard is concerned, I would say that my writing quirk mostly relates to Cultural interchange as I have been the student of History from my college days and believe in change that happens on certain basis, thus it would be a peculiar trend in my writing that I cover things that happens in the current and tries to cover them up which would show that I believe in Continuity or change debate and tries to give that touch to my writing.
To do that effectively, I choose such topic which have a common baseline in past, has been changing in recent times, and I try to locate that in what way that change or new line has come to that certain ideological pillar which gives me strength and help to decide how to cover it up in my writing settlement and make it more potent around.

6.Tell us something about your books except what is mentioned in blurb.
There are two common things you will find in my works, in which 1st is a focal point around which the entire work moves round, and second is a pattern in which each chapter would connect to other, and such movement by which it comes to effect will surely make you feel that a channel of writing has been created which is also known as 'Ring of expansive thoughts' and this is the core value by which I carries on my writing style.
There is also a symbol of essence you would be able to highlight in which I try to first bring the core topic, expands it with the main essence that has been discussed, and then close it out with the future to come which should help you to find a common methodology I obtain to make my writing equally effective.
Lastly anything than that, What you would be able to find in my writing, whether poetry, prose or research commentary that there is a sense of urgency that People should act on the problems, must help everybody realise that such issues are in existence in present, and this style to make sure that people do come to action is the core method for which I create stuff and lets hope that my writing efforts continue to come more and more.

7. In what way youre chosen works highlight the world of writing to which you have established?
There are two major ways they highlight my chosen world, in which 1st has been the direction of settled methodology which you can clearly witness as certain chosen genre follow up the work, And second is to execute plans for bigger platforms that may include my 5 GK Series and the way they have made their impact shows enough the way the works have highlighted their presence and made my world of establishments a bigger one, and together they both stand firm in their direction with my plans to future still under construction.
In this way what I give you as an author that I assure what I have done still continue to be into establishment, I make sure that the things I have planned must be brought to reality by hard work of my entire team, and what I am able to do is that I like to plan in step by step procedure that makes it an accurate journey for which I hope to continue the works around.
With that I hope that the answers are enough to highlight the world I have established, Gratitude again to Bright Zone Promotions for this 2nd interview, and I hope that by your platform I would be able to give my message to a more wider reader community and stay healthy with my quality of content, till more such efforts come, for now its cheers from Charlie...

8.Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?
I have my author pages online on various global stores and I keep my readers in touch not only by such pages but by constant online events decided according to the distributers and publishers where my works have been published and I must say that the responses they give are fruitful.
I usually ask them the way things that have gone through, what type of changes and new experiments they would like, and the way they express by their question session is really appreciating and make me feel that everything has gone on to the right step.
From this interview I would once again like to express them my gratitude, hope their curiosity for my works should continue, and Readers Keep reading, keep supporting, and continue to make me a better author, I am delightful the way you have made me a better author till now and hope the legacy should continue.

9. According to you, how important it is to promote one's book & is it helpful?
It is essential in the way to let certain readers know what your book has done, as it not only let new readers count your work but also help a larger community to reach by which you can find out more reading space and it is also beneficial in the way you can plan your future efforts.
Although while thinking of promotions, it is vital that the author must know how to do it effectively, Sometimes we waste lot of money doing promotions and find it not coming to right potency, Thus it depends on the author's perspective how he or she would try to bring the promotions into effect and in what way he or she can make the most by having them for becoming a better author.
Thus they are no doubt helpful to create craze about your work, surely give you boost for larger audience to come into effect, and if chosen correctly with proper care and not misdirected then can bring great response for which choose carefully and make the most of your work around certain areas by having promotions.

10. Any suggestions for the budding Writers? If yes, then what are they?
There are few suggestions I would have for the new writers who are rising across my New Indian writing legacy, and I have one straight advice for them first of all that they don't get satisfied by a single work and feel that this is over which is not the end of the publishing industry by any means.
The writing industry is vast and oceanic in its comparative legacy and they must establish a long lasting name for themselves if they have to live the entire world out by their writing skills.
Further, I would let them know that they should explore new writing skills, multiple genres of their abilities to create such efforts, and if they are able to create, make sure that they forward that writing legacy to more rising writers which should assure a prominent growth of writing culture across our great India.
Lastly what I would like to mention that they don't get discouraged with lesser impact, few readers, or lesser global response, In early days its only sunrise, then it becomes a basking day, and then an entire day of fruitful trees, but to reach that far you would require strong commitment and don't get disheartened, If you know you are right, make sure you stand like rock on your path and carry on your legacy.
These are the few suggestions I have and with that I would like to close out this interview, My gratitude to Bright Zone Promotions for the entire Interview effort, till more such efforts come, for now its cheers from Charlie...

Thanks for reading.

Author Interview : Nish Amarnath

Author Interview : Nish Amarnath

Hello everyone,
Today I am going to introduce you to the author of 'Victims for Sale'

Let's start!

1. Did you always want to become a writer?
Nish: I was a precocious kid who grew up in different parts of India, Africa and Europe. I’d wonder about esoteric concepts like the afterlife, even when I was as young as four. I never ceased to ask “Why?” for everything. I was initially more into painting and singing. Writing found me during a particularly traumatic phase of my childhood. I was really very young then, and I was so inspired by Enid Blyton’s Magic Faraway Tree series that I just sat down to write a fantasy novel of my own! My first short story was published in a nationally popular children’s magazine when I was eight years old. A counselor recommended an IQ test for me. They found that my IQ was 136, which is about two standard deviations from the average score of 100. Education experts suggested home-schooling or special schools for me. I chose to continue going to regular school as I wanted to be just like any other kid. I wrote a series of school-based novels, and these years of writing gave me practice. When I was around twelve, I remember having a discussion with my parents about which of three paths I wanted to take: painting, singing or writing. After much contemplation, I said, “Writing.” By then, I’d visited some music directors, who’d appreciated my singing voice, and won several state-level and national-level prizes in painting and music competitions; I’d even been written about and interviewed a lot in the media for my painting and singing. So, I recall my parents being quite surprised at the outset. But writing, despite all its uncertainties as a career choice, somehow felt right for me.

2. What is one thing you find in common between fiction-writing, poetry, music, artwork and journalism?
Nish: Well, I’m a mystic, romanticist, an incorrigible nomad and a bit of a rebel! Journalism, fiction, poetry, singing, songwriting, art and video-making merge at different levels to give me the identity of a storyteller. Telling stories through these mediums is how I connect with the external world. I enjoy birthing new characters and creating alternate realities involving different permutations and combinations of situations whose outcomes I can control as a creator of these forms of art! In that respect, being a storyteller is akin to the magic of nature.

3. What is one quote or mantra that you swear by?
Nish: I believe in being practically idealistic as opposed to being idealistically practical. That’s my own play on words! By practically idealistic, I mean chasing one’s heart’s desires in a pragmatic manner as opposed to falling for the illusion of an idealistically practical scenario of “good grades leading to financial stability in a good office job where you can be a model employee and all that” which is essentially what many millennials of South Asian descent have been brought up to believe in. The world has changed so radically and that it’s really about taking ownership of one’s own creative and emotional learning processes to create something meaningful that can do something for someone.

4. Describe Victims for Sale in one line.
Nish: An aspiring TV reporter fights to expose a sex ring targeting mentally challenged women.

5. We understand that Victims for Sale was picked by HarperCollins and is doing very well in India. For those who haven’t yet read it, can you provide a glimpse into what it’s about?
Nish: Couched as a psychological thriller and crime suspense novel set in London, Victims for Sale delves into the sexual and reproductive rights of women in a milieu fraught with conceptions of ‘family honor’ among many traditional South Asian communities. The practice of preserving one’s family honor at all costs is rampant among many South Asian families and communities worldwide, even today in 2020, so Victims for Sale seeks to bring to light ambiguities around the concept of ‘informed consent’ while challenging the notion of sex as a subject that continues to remain taboo among many older-generation Indians. The book also lobs a sliver of light on the challenges faced by an immigrant Indian student in the Western world, presents a snapshot of the ethical dilemmas that investigative reporters face on the field, and subtly questions the absence of concrete security measures for freelance journalists, particularly women, who go undercover in dangerous and precarious environments to unravel the truth.

6. What inspired you to write Victims for Sale? Is it drawn from your real life?
Nish: Victims for Sale was born out of my experiences as a journalist. While on the field, I discovered that family members of mentally challenged women were looking to sterilize them due to a fear of these women getting pregnant as well as difficulty in taking care of their feminine health. Conversations with sources included gynecologists, who cited real-life horror stories, and that set me thinking. The vulnerability of mentally challenged women in this regard has been an under-reported and under-studied topic. Additionally, I’d exposed a trafficking racket in Bahrain as a reporter for IBT Media (formerly Newsweek), and had earlier on volunteered in special schools for the mentally challenged as a pre-university social sciences student. I decided to draw upon these experiences, and my own personal growth in London, to conceive of a novel, which I felt would be an effective medium to underscore this issue and sensitize people to the realities of trafficking as well as the psyches of special-needs individuals through the chronicles of underrepresented characters.

7. What genres would you like to work on?
Nish: As a journalist and author, I’ve covered such a diverse gamut of subjects ranging from the Arab Spring and the euro debt crisis to highly technical aspects of deal flow, restructurings, loan transactions and policy framework planning to trafficking, education, gender neutrality and terrorism to romance, crime, race and immigration. Given the comprehensive space of this spectrum within which I’ve operated, it’s the story that’s most important for me, as a novelist and a fiction-writer. I believe that the genre that’ll do that story the most justice is the one that’ll ultimately stick. For instance, Victims for Sale initially went on submission as a psychological thriller. Later, HarperCollins couched it as a crime thriller and suspense novel. In all of this, the originality and realistic feel of the story, along with the authenticity of its characters, is what got the attention of a big publisher, not the genre it was categorized under.
Many traditional publishers and literary agencies are recognizing that the lines of distinction between genre fiction and multi-genre oeuvres are increasingly blurring. My foremost priority is to keep my readers engaged and happy. So, my current approach involves strengthening my voice as a novelist who specializes in complex emotions and conflict. That’s what I do best.

8. Are you planning other books? How soon can readers expect your next book?
Nish:  I’ve just completed writing another novel, Twin Flame, which is a contemporary romantic and family drama infused with historical overtones and elements of magical realism. Love seems impossible for a Holocaust victim’s descendant, a writer whose tryst with a Math prodigy rekindles his desire to carry forward his bloodline. I worked on this novel under the editorial guidance of Larry Kirshbaum, former chief of publishing at Amazon Publishing and Al Zuckerman, founder of Writers House NYC who has represented authors like Olivia Goldsmith, Nora Roberts and Ken Follett. I signed with a film agency, The Story Ink, earlier in 2020, and I’m seeking literary representation for Twin Flame after my previous agent in New York fell sick. So, when Twin Flame will be out depends on when I find a literary agent for it. Outside of that, I have three other fiction titles on the cards. One of these is a part-financial, part-political thriller, which some readers are suggesting could be a sequel to Victims for Sale. The other is a novel that will most likely be a sequel to Twin Flame, and this novel will dissect a melting pot of issues concerning mental health, LGBTQ rights and systemic racism against the backdrop of psychic fraud, which is rarely foregrounded in fiction – this is the project I may start work on next.

9. How has your journey as an author been so far?
Nish – It has been a very rewarding one, but it hasn’t been without its challenges. I think the biggest challenge for me, in terms of breaking into fiction, was straying away from the mold of public perceptions of my work solely as a financial journalist who had published two non-fiction business books, prior to Victims for Sale. Now, Victims for Sale has done really well with the public, so this has enabled me to share my voice on many social issues at various forums, ranging from autism and media ethics to race, gender dynamics and mental health. For many years, I was in depression, which peeked around the time Victims for Sale was released by HarperCollins in 2018. On hindsight, I think it has given me a fuller range of emotional experience as a writer. As far as the publishing process goes, it’s pretty slow. Before I found representation for Victims for Sale, I attended two writers’ conferences in New York where I connected with a few literary agents and even pitched directly to publishers. During this time, I received interest from Simon and Schuster in New York, but they wanted me to Americanize my narrative. I didn’t feel that would do justice to the heart of the story, which is set in the UK. So, I shifted my focus to finding an agent who would connect with my voice as a writer. I received an offer of representation from the Red Ink Literary Agency. Through the entire process, I learned the virtues of patience, belief in oneself and indefatigable faith in one’s work. It’s sometimes really good to give it a bit of a rest and divert your focus for a while when you know you’ve tried your best. That’s how I believe I broke through the blockage. When I woke up to an email from my literary agent—a bolt from the blue—about HarperCollins’ interest in acquiring the manuscript, and the advance apportioned for it, I nearly fainted! At that time, I hadn’t even been in touch with my agent for about four months.

10. Who is your favorite Indian and Western author?
Nish: In India, my recent favorite is Janice Pariat, whose The Nine-Chambered Heart I found fascinating. The simplicity of her narratives is beautiful, and the abstract cadence of her writings is something I feel is closer to the reality inside of our own heads. Outside of India, I’m a huge fan of Jeanine Cummins. Her latest book, American Dirt is gold. She strikes a judicious blend between description, action and high emotional voltage.

11. Any message for your readers?
Nish: I’d encourage all of you to chase your dreams, even if that means being delusional. Never listen to anyone who puts you down, calls you a loser or a failure, or says your dreams aren’t practical or achievable. We may have various constraints, but let’s view them as opportunities to tap into the resources we do have so that we can build an authentic life that can be lived from a place of truth, light and love.

Thanks for reading.
